The Ignition Method: A Participatory Framework for Teacher-Student Collaboration in Adolescent Wellbeing Assessment
Abstract
This study examines the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of The Ignition Method, a participatory pedagogical framework designed to position students as co-researchers in the assessment of their own wellbeing. The study employed a cross-sectional comparative research design involving 100 students aged 10–14 years across two Middle Eastern contexts: Al Huda School in Muscat, Oman (n = 50) and an urban cohort in Beirut, Lebanon (n = 50). Six teachers participated as Ignition Mentors, facilitating a five-stage participatory process. Quantitative data were collected using the Wellbeing Compass, a 53-item instrument assessing eight dimensions of wellness alongside experiences of stereotyping, tolerance behaviors, and subjective happiness. Reliability analysis yielded acceptable internal consistency across subscales (Cronbach's α = .79–.88). Results revealed that tolerance behaviors were positively associated with subjective wellbeing (r = .38, p < .01, r² = .14). A substantial behavioral gap was identified: 84% of students reported treating peers respectfully, yet only 34% reported actively intervening against stereotyping, t(99) = 8.45, p < .001, d = 1.20. Cross-national differences were statistically significant across emotional, spiritual, financial, and environmental wellness dimensions. Multiple regression analysis indicated that tolerance behaviors were the strongest predictor of subjective happiness (β = .34, p = .001). The study contributes a theoretically grounded, empirically tested participatory framework for student wellbeing assessment and reconceptualizes the teacher's role from content deliverer to Ignition Mentor.Downloads
